Nearly seven years ago, I graduated from Carden Memorial School. I am grateful that I was able to attend this private school, as it made a big impact on my life. It allowed me to value my education, taught me respect and service to others, and much more. I still clearly remember reciting the pledge in French and English, scriptures, poems, and meditations. It is funny to think back to my first day at a public high school. I was shocked when the students just got up to leave when the bell rang, rather than waiting to be excused. I credit carden for instilling in me the work ethic that allowed me to attain a full ride academic scholarship at the University of Utah. I highly recommend Carden.

I completely disagree with the racism fact!!! And the holding kids upside down!!! First of all mr. Jeffs probably hasn’t been able to do that for over 20 years!!! Also about the racism, I still remember Martin Luther king quotes to this day and never once did I hear racist comment at carden!!!

I don’t know anything about the political debate behind the five day work week, but from my experience in needing to use state services or contact state offices, I think the most convenient policy for every day Utahns would be something in between. Most people probably don’t use the services early in the morning (granted that some do), but many would like to use them in the evening after they get done with work. How about a 4 1/2 day schedule that has hours until 7:00 M-Th and then morning hours on Friday? Offices would be open during the week late enough for people to use their services after work, and it would still be possible to get something taken care of on Friday before the weekend. A half-day schedule wouldn’t be ideal for people who have to commute, but then again, they wouldn’t have to go to work so early the rest of the week and they’d still get a head-start on their weekend.

Of course there would be complaints about that as well. . .

In response to JBT, there are a lot of people who do not use state offices enough to be aware of the four day work week, and so they could often be found in a tight spot, or least an inconvenient one, after having planned to take care of something on Friday only to find that state offices are closed that day. Those who often work with the government should be able to remember and plan accordingly, but they make up a relatively small portion of the population.

I think it is self centered to the extreme to believe that the state should pay an additional $1 million per year and inconvenience hundreds of state workers who have arranged their lives and family activities to work four 10 hour days just because one is not bright enough to remember from one week to the next that most state offices are closed on Fridays.

Those offices being open 10 hours per day rather than 8 also makes it possible for most people to go in or call who otherwise could not do so on a weekday because they themselves work from 9 to 6 or 8 to 5.

This veto override was nothing but the immature Republican legislators acting childish because the governor told them no with his veto. All of the differences with the bill’s original sponsor had been worked out in negotiations whereby essential services would be staffed on Fridays allowing each agency to determine it employee’s work schedules.

This is just another example of “small government” conservatives showing their hypocrisy by micro-managing state services just to assert that they have the self-delegated authority to do so.

im a student at carden im it 8th grade and have been here since kindergarten i lov carden its such a wonderul school and i dont want to leave it will be very sad when i have to. people thing private schools are boring schools with bratty people but carden isent carden is wonderful!
